Zip files are "archives" used for distributing and storing files. Zip files contain one or more files. Usually the files "archived" in a Zip are compressed to save space. Zip files make it easy to group files and make transporting and copying these files faster.
Two benefits of using archives for electronic file distribution are that only one file transfer operation ("download") is required to obtain all related files and file transfer time is minimized because the files in an archive are compressed.
To unzip the files you will need a copy of WinZip or similar uncompressing software. Many computers already have this installed but if you don't you can download an evaluation copy from http://www.winzip.com/download.htm.
To unzip the zip files once you have downloaded them you will need to install WinZip, which can be found at http://www.winzip.com/download.htm.
To extract the files inside, just double click on the zip document and the WinZip program will take you through the steps you need to take.
It's important to store all the zip files and the extracted documents in directories on your hard drive where you will be able to retrieve them easily and to ensure links are correct. Exactly how you do this is up to you, but you may want to have a separate directory for ESS BIZTOOLS and individual files for papers, PowerPoints, seminars etc.
Click on the “Download” link at the bottom of the webpage of the document you wish to download. You will be asked if you want to open the zip file or save it to disk. Choose the save to disk option and select the directory on your hard drive where you want the zip file to be stored.
