The economic difficulties continue in many parts of Australia and, at present, there is little doubt that Australia has a "two-speed" economy in operation. Whilst it is generally accepted that the peak economic development is being driven by the mining industry in Western Australia and Queensland, many other businesses, particularly businesses catering for international tourists and discretionary retail spending, have endured difficult trading conditions. Exporters have continued to suffer the penalty of high exchange rates, although the recent reduction A$.92 to US$1 has been welcome news for exporters. Conversely the recent movement will result in an increase in costs for importers.

Now is the time to take action! Tough times in business are part of the cyclical nature of business operations, however to survive you need to plan and think through how your business is going to perform.

The "Survival in Difficult Times for SMEs" workbook is a questionnaire which enables an accountant to conduct a "due diligence" review on a small/medium enterprise business. The sections within the workbook are:

  • Financial Review:
    • Financial Accounts
    • Gross Profit Analysis
    • Wages to Turnover Analysis
    • Net Profit Before Tax Percentage Analysis
    • Debtors' Days Outstanding Calculator
    • Debtors
    • Fixed Assets
  • Market and Customer Review:
    • Market
    • Marketing
    • Sales
    • Customers
    • Sales Analysis and Review
    • Sales Targets
  • Cashflow Review:

    • Cashflow Forecast - Short Term

While using the workbook you're able to obtain additional information on a subject by clicking on the subject heading within the "Related Documents". You can use the workbook with your clients - ask the questions and type in the answers.

In each section you're able to type in specific actions. These comments will automatically be reflected in the "Review Report".

Included in the workbook are specific worksheets for:

  • Sales Analysis and Review
  • Sales Targets
  • Debtors' Days Outstanding Calculation (including an annual credit sales'/debtors' reckoner adjusted by average payment days)

Paper 006-085 - "Business Evaluation for SMEs Workbook" compliments the workbook with additional commentary on the individual sections.
