An employer needs to clearly tell an applicant what you want them to do. This should be carefully spelled out as the terms and conditions of the employment offer, including a detailed Job Specification.

Make sure the applicant is not under any misunderstanding as to what the position actually entails:

  • to whom the applicant reports
  • performance indicators
  • hours of work
  • and any other special conditions of the position.

Every job should include a reasonable probationary period. During this period you should make sure that the employee can actually do the job.

This paper sets out, in six pages, general advice on confirming the job offer under the headings:

  • Tell The Applicant What You Want Them To Do
  • Probationary Period
  • Award/Enterprise Agreement
  • Offer Letter
  • Suggestions For Drafting A Letter Of Employment
  • Contract Of Employment
  • Details To Be Included In A Contract Of Employment
  • Forwarding Of Contract To Applicant
  • Employee’s Files

and includes as an Addendum, a standard letter of appointment, which can be edited and utilised as an employment offer letter.
