Empowering Bookkeepers to DELIVER Advisory Services

Empowering Bookkeepers to DELIVER Advisory Services

Business Advisory Services Update

The recent article in the Financial Review, featuring the CEO of MYOB, Paul Robson, clearly identified FISCAL MANAGEMENT as a significant issue for SMEs. Mr Robson indicated that many SMEs start off with great intentions and have undertaken reasonable research. However, they run into problems after about six months in business.

Did they have a realistic budget and cash flow forecast? Could you as their bookkeeper have prepared it for them?

Did they have an understanding of the conditions that some suppliers impose, especially for new business operators, such as new accounts and payment terms? Could you as their bookkeeper alert them of potential cash flow problems if they are preparing their own cash flow forecast relative to this department?

Most bookkeepers have tradies as clients. How many do you have? What else could you do for them rather than maintain their cash receipts and payment records? Have you assisted them in developing profitable charge-out rates for each of their members (if not sole trader), as part of a plan to earn sufficient revenue to meet the targeted profit for their business?

A couple of years ago at Xerocon, the former Tax Commissioner, Chris Jordan, urged bookkeepers and accountants to offer a broader range of services and “focus on becoming a brilliant and trusted advisor.”

There is no doubt that the market is changing. Some bookkeepers have taken heed of this, along with the former Tax Commissioner’s comment, and are offering Advisory Services to SMEs. You can too!
