Starting the “scaling up” process

Business Advisory Services Update

“Scaling up” just doesn’t happen! There is no quick fix, the process requires planning, discipline and adherence to systems.

Accountants who are embracing the concept of providing Business Advisory Services can make a valuable contribution to the company by advising on the key components to establish a well-run company.

The items that you should be communicating on relate to:

  • The leadership team is healthy and aligned to the corporate vision.
  • Key leadership team positions have been filled and each member understands their job responsibility and their key performance indicators.
  • There is an understanding that each quarter, 1 – 3 strategies will be identified which have to be completed in that quarter. This will require an alignment from all of the team to ensure that the strategies are achieved.
  • The CEO should not be allocated numerous tasks as part of this process – the tasks should be allocated to the leadership team members. The CEO’s role is to act as the coach and mentor, to encourage the leadership team members to complete the allocated tasks in a satisfactory manner.
  • Procedure manuals for each segment of the company’s operations should be prepared and regularly reviewed.
  • Communication with customers is very important – processes should be implemented to ensure that customer comments, whether favourable or not, are promptly conveyed to the leadership team members.
  • The leadership team should be encouraged to articulate their vision which you can incorporate within the Business Plan. The financial implications of the business plan can then be summarised in the predictive accounting projections – budgets – cash flow forecast – projected balance sheets.
