Advising SMEs On Funding Opportunities

Accountant's Minute 253

Despite COVID-19 Coronavirus and all of its associated problems Crowd Sourced Funding continued to grow in Australia during 2020 and the Joint Founder and Managing Director of Birchal Pty Ltd, one of Australia’s leading Crowd Sourced Funding Intermediaries, Matt Vitale, expects 2021 to be a “bumper year” for the capital raising market centred on small businesses and medium-sized enterprises.

In a discussion with Matt Vitale earlier in the week, he indicated that the team at Birchal based in Melbourne, even though operating on a lockdown basis working from home, have been very busy assisting SMEs situated all over Australia to be able to raise capital.

There is a significant opportunity for accountancy firms to be able to offer Crowd Sourced Funding Equity Raising advice to their clients.

In the new ESS BIZTOOLS “Business Advisory Services Update Webinars/Conversations” being presented on Wednesday 2nd December at 12-noon AEDT/11.00am AEST, ESS BIZTOOLS’ Managing Director, Peter Towers, will be joined by Priscilla Bea Smith, Director, Cloud Nine Associates to discuss “Alternative Funding for New Businesses – What’s the New Trends?”

The alternative funding includes:

  • Crowd Sourced Funding Equity Raising
  • Early Stage Innovation Company Capital Raising
  • Loans of up to $1 million - 50% funded by the Australian government, available via banks and financial institutions.
  • Private companies can raise up to $5 million in a 12 month period utilising Crowd Sourced Funding Equity Raising.
  • Young private companies (under 6 years of age) can potentially raise capital and, in so doing, their new investors will obtain a taxation rebate and potentially avoid capital gains tax on those shares.
  • The new 50% Federal Government Guaranteed Loans can be used for any commercial purpose.

Each of those proposals require documentation to be prepared, including:

  • Business Plan;
  • Budgets;
  • Cashflow Forecasts; and
  • Specific documentation such as Crowd Sourced Funding Offer Document.
