What Opportunities Are Available And How Can The Entrepreneurs' Programme Assist?
Accountant's Minute 235
Welcome!
In this week’s "COVID-19 Survival Panel" webinar, Andrew Geddes, Accountant Coach/Mentor and Former Chairman of Greencross Ltd (a top 200 ASX company), will present an update on his advice for accountants on how you can assist your small business and medium-sized enterprise clients to navigate through the difficult trading conditions that will confront all businesses as the COVID-19 support programs – "Jobkeeper”/"Boosting Cashflow" start to run down for most businesses from 30th September 2020.
Andrew will pose a question “What Opportunities Are Staring You in the Face Right Now”?
- Utilisation of Coronavirus SME Guarantee Loans for working capital to enhance business operations?
- Contacting clients asking them a series of questions.
- What do we do for them that they like?
- How does that make them feel?
- How does it make them look in the marketplace?
Analyse the responses and determine how you might be able to utilise these responses in your marketing activities to your other clients and prospects.
- Development of specialist products' website to produce video material to promote the business.
- Developing webinar presentations for clients and prospects on how you would go about securing loan funds under the Coronavirus Guarantee Loan Scheme.
- Identify a competitor who you could have a conversation with relative to the possibility of merging both businesses to achieve a more efficient firm?
Andrew Geddes will challenge you to undertake these types of reviews with your senior leadership team analysing your client lists to determine proactive strategies that you could suggest to your clients to help their businesses be very successful during 2020/21.
Our other keynote speaker this week is Renee Chilton, Assistant Regional Manager for AusIndustry in North Queensland. Renee will summarise the assistance that is available for businesses from the Australian government.
The Entrepreneurs' Program can connect growing businesses to build capacity, improve capability, extend networks and take advantage of growth opportunities in Australia and overseas. The Entrepreneurs' Program's services include:
- business management advice and project funding;
- connections and funding for research projects; and
- commercialisation expertise and funding.

In last week’s webinar presentations Priscilla Bea Smith, Partner, Cloud Nine Associates, gave an overview of the services that her organisation offers to bookkeepers and accountants to help them develop a better understanding of the Taxation Act's requirements and the Taxation Board’s role and requirements for bookkeeper and tax agent registrations.
Peter Towers, Managing Director, ESS BIZTOOLS, spoke about the research and development system and how a systemised approach is very beneficial for businesses to ensure that they have complied with all aspects of the legislation. It is also extremely beneficial for accountants because there is a system that outlines the various steps required for the client to clearly go through the processes to identify whether there is any “prior art” relative to the concept for which the client is trying to develop a new product, process or service.
The support that the Research and Development Tax Incentive Offset can give to companies was discussed and the Federal Government Grant – “Accelerating Commercialisation” that is available to assist in the commercialisation process for companies.
A brief overview was given for the Early Stage Innovation Company Status which enables a qualifying company to be able to attract investors and offer the investors some taxation inducements to encourage them to invest in the company.
There are significant benefits for accountancy firms and their clients, if the accountants utilise a systematic approach to all aspects of research and development, similar to what ESS BIZTOOLS has developed for accountants to utilise.
