2022 – Falling Behind or Scaling Up?

Let us look at the issues confronting accountancy firms:

Scaling Up

This is so important that we are re-quoting from our previous edition of Accountants Minute where Andrew Geddes, a legend of the Australian accountancy industry and a key advisor, director and chair of Green Cross Ltd, a company that grew from a one-man veterinary surgery business to a top 200 ASX company gave some critical advice to the Australian accounting industry:

“THE SCALING UP PROCESS SHOULD BE IMPLEMENTED BY PARTNERS AND SENIOR MANAGERS TO ASSIST IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF YOUNGER ACCOUNTANTS BY GIVING THEM THE OPPORTUNITY TO WORK WITH PARTNERS AND SENIOR MANAGERS AS THEY WORK DIRECTLY WITH SENIOR EXECUTIVES OF CLIENT ORGANISATIONS SO THAT THE YOUNGER ACCOUNTANTS DEVELOP ALL THE IMPORTANT SKILLS, GAIN CONFIDENCE AND A GREATER APPRECIATION OF WHAT THE ACCOUNTANTS ROLE IS SO AS TO HELP ACCOUNTING FIRMS WITH RETENTION AND ATTRACTION STRATEGIES TO ATTRACT NEW STAFF.”

Andrew was invited to comment as to whether the implementation of the “Scaling up” process could be deferred for six months or so because of the work pressures that accountancy firms have been under during the COVID 19 crisis – Andrew Geddes replied quite emphatically:

“YOU’VE GOT TO START NOW – THIS AFTERNOON – BECAUSE YOUR GREATEST CHALLENGE, AT THE MOMENT, IS GETTING GOOD PEOPLE TO WORK WITH!”

CommBank Accounting Market Pulse

The CommBank Accounting Market Pulse that was released in May 2021 indicated that the accounting firms that were surveyed had stated that all but 5% of them would be implementing diversified services over the next two years.

THIS MEANS THAT 95% OF THE FIRMS SURVEYED HAVE A STRATEGY TO INTRODUCE DIVERSIFIED SERVICES AND WHEN ASKED TO IDENTIFY WHAT WAS THE TOP SERVICE LINE THAT THE FIRMS WERE TARGETING THEY CLEARLY IDENTIFIED “BUSINESS ADVISORY SERVICES.”

The firms that were surveyed appear to be offering interesting and challenging work and are probably not experiencing the challenges that the Accountants Daily article has identified.
