Business in a Post-Pandemic World – Presents Great Opportunities!

Accountant's Minute 294

At long last the COVID-19 lockdowns are ending and there is an air of optimism in the marketplace as businesses go about the task of reopening and repositioning themselves for what is expected to be boom conditions in 2022.

Accountants, this is a great opportunity to identify yourselves as a proactive accounting firm that is willing to supply a range of business enhancement services to your SME clients.

In the “ESS BIZTOOLS Business Advisory Services Podcast” this week Phil Chynoweth, Managing Director, Bridge Global joined Peter Towers, Managing Director, ESS BIZTOOLS to review the recent Zoom presentation by Professor Terry Kramer, Adjunct Professor, Anderson School of Management, UCLA (University of California Los Angeles) and to comment on the benefits for Australian companies from participating in the UCLA GAP Field Study Program.  You can listen to the podcast by clicking here.

“Terry Kramer, as an Adjunct Professor at UCLA, has spent time at Harvard University but more importantly fundamentally he is a businessman who ran Vodafone in America and has had a number of senior business positions.”

“UCLA is really looking into the future – What are the changes that are happening within society?  How are they going to impact on people in the community and on businesses?”

“Kramer emphasised that it’s the pace of the acceleration of change and the adoption by companies of new technologies that has increased from what was “years” to now being achieved in a “few months”.

“There was an absolute incredible increase in the use of online technologies and people who you would never have thought of actually using online shops are now doing so”.

“The key thing that comes through is that we have businesses which have absolutely boomed during COVID-19 whereas others including tourism, airlines, accommodation that are still suffering and whilst they are expected to come back to some extent it is not expected that they will return to the levels they were at pre-COVID-19”.

“There is an expectation that business travel would reduce by around 40%”.

Kramer said “this is because, whilst people have found that they are quite comfortable with the idea of making Zoom calls, they cannot justify all of the travelling that was going on previously”.

“Businesses need to keep their finger on the pulse, need to be watching what is going on because if a trend starts it can happen quite quickly and probably more quickly than a lot of businesses realise”.

ESS BIZTOOLS comment:

A trend that we expect to occur in Australia is the expectation of SME businesses that they can obtain business related advice to assist them to grow their businesses.  This will give accountants the opportunity to offer “virtual Chief Financial Officer Services” on a daily/weekly basis so that the leadership team, within a business, has access to information which will assist them to navigate their business through the challenges that will confront all businesses in 2022.

Professor Kramer said “there is strong expectation of a boom to follow COVID-19 just like the boom that followed the end of Spanish Flu in 1919”.  This ushered in the era which became known as the “Roaring Twenties!”

IS YOUR ACCOUNTING FIRM GOING TO BE READY TO CAPITALISE ON THIS TREND WHEN IT STARTS?

Opportunity for exporters to learn about overseas markets:

Phil Chynoweth commented on another opportunity for Australian companies wanting to expand their export sales which is the “GAP Field Study” offered by UCLA.

“For companies which are already developing markets overseas it’s very important that the leadership team has a good perspective and understanding about the changes that are taking place in the market”.

“The UCLA program has attracted about 90 Australian companies over the last 15 years.  This program gives companies the opportunities to link up with a team of proactive business people who are finalising their MBAs at UCLA for a direct cost investment of around $20,000.  This team will then undertake business research on behalf of the Australian company over an intensive six-month period”.

Chynoweth indicated that “companies which are eligible for the Export Market Development Grant are normally able to claim their direct costs for participating in this program from the grant”.

If you wish to find out more information on how a client can participate in the UCLA GAP Field Study you can contact Phil Chynoweth at or telephone: 0415 919 191.

A reminder that the Export Market Development Grant application for proposed expenditure in 2021/22 is currently open and closes on 30 November 2021.
