"DATA” will be King in a Post Lockdown World!

Accountants are in a unique position to assist small and medium-sized businesses to recalibrate their business strategies to meet the challenges of a “post lockdown world”.

In an interesting presentation last week, Terry Kramer, Faculty Director of the Anderson School of Management at UCLA (University of California, Los Angeles) and chair of Skylo Technologies indicated that his expectation was that there would be boom conditions over the next twelve months very similar to what happened when the Spanish Flu was finally constrained in 1920.  Kramer said that this boom ushered in the “Roaring Twenties”.

“Boom times” are not always rewarding for every business because a lot of businesses miss the “starter’s gun”.  What strategies does your accountancy firm need to introduce to assist your clients to benefit from these projected boom times?

Professor Kramer indicated that:

  • COVID has changed the idea about “place” relating to activities such as:
  • grocery store – there has been an upsurge in home deliveries
  • movie theatre – Netflix has grown
  • classroom – home schooling and greater use of products like Zoom
  • workplaces – working from home
  • Don’t expect a reversion back to the “old ways” as the threat from COVID-19 eases

“In the United States tele-health had grown from 15% to 75% of the market during COVID-19.  Once COVID ends the market will never revert back to its original level of 15% of the market, it could possibly settle at around 35%”.

  • The real shift is in “DATA”
  • “The more “DATA” you have the more predictable material you have”.

What this is indicating is that there is an expectation that the world is going to move into a new phase just as it did when Spanish Flu was brought under control and the boom conditions of the early 1920’s commenced.

If these predictions are accurate and we expect that they are, many of your clients are going to be expecting you to be able to provide a broader range of services –i.e. “DATA” to assist them to run better businesses and possibly to “scale up” their business operations to meet market demand.
