Business Advisory Services - Where Do You Start?
Accountant's Minute 272
Preparation is important and not trying to answer all potential questions about “Business Advisory Services” at the very beginning.
Business advisory services is basically supplying to small businesses and medium sized enterprises access to the type of accounting services they would expect to receive from a qualified accountant who was working for the business on a full-time basis.
The technologies and communication systems which are now available enable accountants, in public practice, to be able to deliver a “Virtual Chief Financial Officer Service” to SME clients.
The challenge that many accountants will have is that clients will either say to you:
- “All that you have done for us for the last 5 years is prepare our income tax returns and annual accounts, how can you now advise us on a range of commercial matters that you have never discussed with us in the past?”; or
- Some accountants will have their own fear or reservations about their own ability to give advice to clients about a range of matters that traditionally they have not concerned themselves with.
This is part of the challenge that many professions, not just accountants, are facing with changes in market place expectations, technology, communications and knowledge.
It’s very desirable that, before making any representations to clients about supplying a broader range of professional services, the accountancy firm has prepared itself first.
This includes undertaking training relative to the types of services that your firm will be delivering, including mock training and a review of marketing and communication strategies to be implemented to convey to your clients and prospects that your accountancy firm, or some of the members of your firm, have undertaken additional training so that your firm is now able to deliver a broader range of professional services.
At ESS BIZTOOLS we have developed the “Business Advisory Services Starter Package” to assist accountancy firms to start with the basic package and then to be able to progressively offer additional services as you become more confident with the delivery of business advisory services, or to enable you to respond to particular requests from a client e.g. can you help me prepare a research and development tax incentive rebate application or, I understand that private companies can now raise capital direct from the public, can you assist me? (ESS BIZTOOLS can because we have prepared product packages for these subjects and many others to assist our subscribers to deliver these diversified services).
The Business Advisory Services Starter Package commences with:
- Business Advisory Services Training Package which comprises modules covering:
- Introduction to Business Advisory Services
- Getting Organised for Business Advisory Services
- Team Training
- Leadership Strategies
- Review products/services that your firm could offer.
- Marketing Strategies – this is very important – you have to communicate to your clients that you’re offering a broader range of services.
- Using the SME Needs’ Analysis with clients to get their input on the services they’d like you to provide to them.
- Launching Business Advisory Services by a seminar/webinar so that your clients know what you’re doing.
