Diversification Includes An Understanding Of Human Resources
Accountant's Minute 287
“The future will be vastly different – we will see some clients receiving diversified services which will create greater value for the client’s business, but also the accounting firm” Jordan Lowry, Managing Director, Blackstone Business Group said in a preview discussion.
“Accountants, who are offering a diversified service, need an understanding of the operations of the Workplace Health and Safety Legislation so that they can offer key advisor’s services to SME clients”.
Jordan Lowry is the guest presenter in the “Diversifying Accounting Services – Why?” webinar being presented on Thursday 9th September 2021 at 12-noon AEST – to register click here.
A recent survey conducted by Anthill Magazine indicated that 81% of business operators do not expect business conditions and operations to return to what they were in January 2020 before the impact of COVID-19 was fully appreciated by the Australian business community.
There is an expectation that this could accelerate the requests of many SME operators for their accountants to supply them with more services directly related to the day-to-day business operations that will contribute to the development of their businesses. One of these new service requirements is an expectation that accountants can be, at least, a “project manager” relating to keeping the SME business operator aware of Human Resources issues. What does this mean to your accountancy, business advisory, chief financial officer or bookkeeping business?
Do you and your colleagues need to develop a greater understanding of the Human Resources issues that confront every business that employs staff? Jordan Lowry has made some other comments relating to accountants offering diversified services:
- “Branding by accountancy firms will be important – this relates to ‘stamping their brand’ on key services, such as the development of business plans and strategies and the trusted advisor relationship”.
- “Accountants need an awareness of 3 significant government regulators:
- Australian Taxation Office
- Workplace Health and Safety
- Fair Work Australia”
“Most accountants have already established that they have expert status with taxation matters, but the new commercial order is going to require accountants to have a clear understanding of Workplace Health and Safety’s and Fair Work Australia’s requirements so that they can communicate these legal requisites to their clients, especially if they are offering a virtual Chief Financial Officer Services”.
- “SMEs want accountants to make them aware of the numbers – to be an ‘accountability partner’ with regular touch points – weekly – monthly”.
- “In many situations an accountant, offering a virtual CFO role, will also be co-opted into being the COO (Chief Operating Officer) for a SME business. This will be me, because accountants will develop a clear grasp and understanding of each key function of the business, relating to:
- Business Planning
- Marketing
- Strategies
- Employee Management
- Culture
- Compliance”
- “To offer these services, accountants will be able to utilise the checklists for many of these functions that ESS BIZTOOLS has developed for them so, in some respects, the performance of the CFO/COO role will be a ‘bit of an audit’ so that the owner/manager of the business can receive assurance that these important matters are being attended to”.
