Implementing Systemisation - Session 1 Reflection on ESS BIZTOOLS’ Systemisation Journey
Accountant's Minute 299
SYSTEMISING BUSINESS ADVISORY SERVICES
In last week’s ESS BIZTOOLS’ Business Advisory Services Podcast – “Systemising Business Advisory Services”, Peter Towers, Managing Director, ESS BIZTOOLS discussed recent comments made by experienced accountants on why systems are important for the effective delivery of Business Advisory Services.
Mark Holton, Director, Smithink indicated that “Most firms do not have systems for the delivery of Business Advisory Services – it tends to be a one-off job”.
Mark suggested “That the preparation of a Budget or Cashflow Forecast was an ideal opportunity for accountants to suggest to a client that a quarterly business review meeting process should then be introduced to analyse the actual financial performance against the Budget and Cashflow estimates progressively throughout the year”.
Amanda Gascoigne, an experienced chartered accountant and advisor to small firms commented that “If you have got the systems you will get the extra work, but you must be prepared to be reactive to what your clients are seeking”.
Andrew Geddes a legend of the Australian accounting industry and a key advisor, director and former chair of Greencross Ltd, a company that grew to be a Top 200 ASX company, indicated that the “scaling up” process was the key system that had been introduced to assist Greencross and, he believes, that the scaling up process should be implemented by accountants to assist in the development of younger accountants by giving them the opportunity to work with experienced accountants directly with senior executives of client organisations so they develop the all-important skills and gain a greater appreciation of what the accountant’s role is, so as to help with retention and attraction strategies by accounting firms.
Peter Towers asked Andrew whether accountants could implement the systems that he was referring to in about 6 months’ time when they might not be quite as busy.
Andrew Geddes’ response was “YOU’VE GOT TO START NOW – THIS AFTERNOON – BECAUSE YOUR GREATEST CHALLENGE, AT THE MOMENT, IS GETTING GOOD PEOPLE TO WORK WITH!”
