Ready For A Change

Are you hesitant to implement changes to your accountancy firm because you don’t know where to start?
This is not an uncommon problem. Many accountants have thought about diversification and have decided to implement diversification but never seem to find the time – there is always another compliance task that you think has to be done by you!
Sound familiar? Then I hope that the following comments will assist you and show you that you are not alone in being caught halfway between making a decision to “ implement change” and “getting started”.
These are some of the comments that accountants have made to me:
– “I’m growing tired of compliance”
- “I’m personally excited by the opportunity to provide Business Advisory Services to my clients”
– “I’m keen to start providing these new services”
- “I need the guidance, handholding and shortcuts from someone I can trust to
mentor me and get me confident with the marketing and execution of these new services”
– “I’m an experienced, qualified accountant and my firm has been in business for over 15 years – I have a growth mindset and I’m always looking for ways to continue to grow my business”
– “I wanted to do more than just taxation and compliance focused work”
– “I am a “ Trusted Business Advisor” to my clients – I want to serve them fully and broadly across the business”
Do any of these comments sound familiar?.
I find that a lot of accountancy firm principals are feeling that they have done compliance for too long and are at the point where it is now becoming repetitive and mundane. They believe (and I think quite rightly) that with their team in place it’s time to pursue more meaningful personal and professional engagements by serving their client base fully in more interesting ways.
They have decided that the “Trusted Business Advisor” title gives them the obligation but also the opportunity to invest time and energy in developing new skills so that they can grow with their clients and enjoy the journey in assisting their clients to “Add Value” to their businesses in a wide range of activities of which the following is a sample:
- By identifying clients and/or prospects who are undertaking research and development and assisting them to receive the benefits of the Research and Development Rebate
- Assisting clients who have completed their research and development phase to understand the government grants that are available and perhaps to assist them in submitting an application for an Accelerating Commercialisation Grant – this is a grant of up to $1,000,000 on a 50% basis to assist with the commercialisation of a Research and Development Project
- One of the consistent problems for most aspiring entrepreneurs who have undertaken Research and Development projects is that they run out of money. You could assist them by:
briefing them on the “Early-Stage Innovation Company Capital Raising Process”
Preparing the Business Plan
Preparing the Predictive Accounting Reports – Budgets, Cash Flow Forecast and Projected Balance Sheets
and, then undertaking the Due Diligence Process to assist your client’ s company to become an “ Early-Stage Innovation Company” and
then, raise capital from investors and incidentally the investors are able to receive significant taxation benefits from investing in this type of company.
- You could then elect to accept appointment as the “ Chief Financial Officer” of the company (which probably will not be large enough to appoint a full-time CFO)
